Alabama, known as the "Heart of Dixie," is a hot and humid place.       The landscape is very diverse, with mountains and valleys up north, national forests to the east, and coastal plains throughout the state, down to beaches at the southern coast.

It's a state that's known for football, and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn University Tigers are two of the fiercest rivalries in the country, not to mention two of the best teams.

They're also known for rockets: they built the first rocket to travel to the moon!      Go to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville to check out one of Alabama's top attractions, and prepare to spend a good chunk of time seeing what man can achieve.

Another reason to visit is to experience the true American South - Southern states are known for something called Southern hospitality, and Alabama is no exception.       What is Southern hospitality, you ask?       It's the attitude of folks in this area, a polite, warm manner that makes anyone feel welcome and accepted.

Whether you visit hilly cities like Huntsville up north, Birmingham in the middle, or Mobile down on the coast, you'll experience a welcome you'll never forget.

Along with that Southern hospitality comes hefty doses of food, and in a state that's known for its delicious options, that's a very good thing.

You can get fresh seafood from the gulf, incredible desserts anywhere, and an endless amount of fried foods, (fried pickles, anyone?) but one of the most unique dishes to the state would have to be grits.

Never heard of them?     They're a delicious dish made from ground corn kernels and have a creamy texture similar to porridge when boiled.

You can top them with whatever you like, but cheese grits and shrimp and grits seem to be the favorites.       With all the heavy, deep-fried foods the South in particular is known for, grits are a much lighter option than most of what you'll find.

Grab a plate while you watch the Crimson Tide and Tigers battle it out on the field and you'll feel like a true "Alabaman."

But, if you're looking for a meal unique to Alabama, you should get a plate of grits.     You may have never heard of them, but they're a delicious meal made from ground corn kernels and have a creamy texture similar to porridge when boiled.

You can top them with whatever you like, but cheese grits and shrimp grits are the most popular.       With all the deep-fried foods the South is known for, grits are a much healthier option than most of what you'll find.

Grab a plate while you watch either the Crimson Tide or Tiger's football teams dominate and you'll feel like a true "Alabaman."
