On September 25th, 2017, Stephen Paddock checked into room 32-135 of the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Four days later, he checked into room 32-134 - a direct connection to the room he was already in.
Both rooms overlooked Las Vegas Village, a venue diagonal in location to the hotel, which was commonly used to host outdoor performances.
Performances like the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival, which was due to start in just a few days.
But who was Stephen Paddock? According to those who knew him, he was a quiet sort of man, a high-stakes gambler who played mostly video poker and a heavy drinker. He had been divorced twice and had no children, just a long-time girlfriend.
At 64 years old, he was a retired real-estate businessman and former auditor who had never had any sort of problems with the law. However, his dad, Benjamin Paddock, was on the FBI's most wanted list for bank robbery back in the 1970s.
Did that play a part in his actions that night? Unfortunately, we'll never know, as any reasons he may have had will forever remain in the grave with him.
